COVID-19 Workers’ Compensation Insurance Premium Relief Program

As Hawai`i begins the road to recovery, we are pleased to announce HEMIC’s COVID-19 Workers’ Compensation Premium Relief Program, which will provide $2 million dollars in immediate financial relief to policyholders, in the form of a premium credit. This program is intended to provide immediate relief to you, our policyholders, at a time when it is needed most.

As a HEMIC policyholder, you will be automatically included in this program: No application is required and no further action is needed by you. Instead, you can continue to focus on your business and expect to receive a premium credit distribution in mid-July.

Please note that this program is aside and separate from HEMIC’s annual Policyholder Dividend, which rewards good safety practices and loyalty.

HEMIC’s Temporary Suspension of Premium Payment Program, which ran March 19 through May 31, 2020 was a strong success, with over 900 policyholders participating.

New “Passport” App Can Help Transition Workers Back Safely

As Hawai`i is taking careful steps to recover from COVID-19, HEMIC has begun to transition our employees back into the office. We developed a mobile app called “Passport” to facilitate our employees’ safe return to a healthy workplace. Since it is working well for us, we’d like to share it with you.

The Passport App helps employers confirm that each worker is symptom-free prior to entering the workplace each day or shift. The app is simple, easy and confidential.

Here’s how it works:

  • The employee opens the app before reporting to work and takes a short survey about COVID-19 symptoms.
  • Their status is sent confidentially to your HR contact.
  • If the employee is symptomatic, they are instructed not to report to work, to monitor their symptoms, and to follow-up with a doctor.
  • HR can then maintain regular communication with any symptomatic employee, confirming their next steps and planning for a healthy return.

The Passport App is available to all HEMIC policyholders and can be easily customized for those utilizing MS Office 365. For others, a web-hosted version is available.

If you are a policyholder interested in using the Passport app, click here to request access.

Commitment to Hawai`i Employers

When HEMIC was founded over 20 years ago as a private, mutual insurance company, our goal was to provide workers’ compensation coverage to every business owner in Hawai`i, regardless of risk level. Over the past two decades, we’ve grown into the leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance in Hawai`i, serving 6,700 businesses and 75,000 workers with a commitment to exceptional service and innovation.

Today, we remain committed to proudly serving all of Hawai`i’s employers with aloha and integrity. We understand the unique nature of Hawai`i’s workplaces because we’re one too. As a 100% local insurance carrier, we know that every customer we serve is a neighbor and member of our own community – and we value those relationships above all. We’re committed to helping improve jobsite safety and resolving all issues our customers face with the utmost malama and expediency.

We are Hawai`i’s only mutual insurance company, which means we’re owned by our policyholders. Our goals are their best interests. The HEMIC dividend program rewards good jobsite safety performance and proper claims handling by writing dividend checks to qualifying policyholders every year. Over the past thirteen years, we’ve returned over $38 million in dividends to qualifying employers.
